More about Dr Deb and STEM subjects

I was very fortunate to have a fun and inspiring physics teacher at school. Having previously worked as an engineer, he was able to bring the subject to life. On reflection, I realise that if I’d had a less positive experience of physics classes at school, I may have pursued a career in another area. That emphasises to me the key role that teaching plays in a student’s perception of a subject and nowhere is this currently more vital than in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) featuring so strongly on government agendas.

I have found my chosen studies and career enormously satisfying. Proficiency in physics brings greater insights and understanding in all of the sciences, and provides excellent opportunities for applying mathematical techniques.

I have twenty years of experience of communicating science including private tutoring, public presentations and classroom teaching. Having the opportunity to share my physics knowledge with young people never fails to redouble my love for the subject and I like to think this enthusiasm is conveyed in my teaching.

My early career gave me a very broad overview of the many career paths and benefits associated with the study of physics and the other sciences. For those interested in further study, I can provide information and advice based on that knowledge and my own experience.

Young people learn best when they feel relaxed and at ease and I aim to make my office a welcoming and comfortable environment in which to learn. Parents are strongly encouraged to speak with me before their children begin tuition and I appreciate parents remaining in contact with me to discuss progress.
